Conjure Cuts: Spiritual Nail $ets. Ms. Monet W The Moods.

To Listen: Jaguar - Victoria Monet

As you all may know I believe that everything can be spiritual and take a lot of pleasure in weaving my intentions into my aesthetic. Whether its my nails, my hair or my fit, I pick colors shapes and shades based on the energy I want to pull in, or harness for the season. My nail appointment lined up in time for my preparation for this eclipse season so let’s dive into what I picked and why.

I have been diving deep into @kikimancy’s work via @occultnails and some of her writings and ebooks. I’m not sure where she is choosing to share her work now, but a few years back I purchased her nail divination ebooks and they have been a wonderful companion in helping me choose my sets, and intuitively pull in the energy I want to see.

The other place I pull my spiritual nail inspiration from is from my own astrological chart, and my interest and study in Vedic astrology and Tantra. I am an initiated tantrika, and the deeper I dive into my relationship with the Goddess, the more I learn that aesthetic and adornment are anything but frivolous and are instead ways that we can put more beauty into the world for others to enjoy, after first and foremost pleasing ourselves.

These nails were inspired by Jaguar by Victoria Monet and my own personal nakshatra (the lunar mansions of the moon in Vedic astrology) Chitra. In Vedic astrology each of the Nakshatra have “yoni animals” that describe the energy of each of the nakshatras as they manifest in the individuals with those placements. Most of the nakshatra have “yoni consorts” that are their energetic match and share the animal. Chitra is represented by the tiger, and the associated energies of regality, protectiveness, camouflage and shape shifting. Chitra is also associated with the multi colored gem or jewel, representing the multifaceted nature of this sign, and the natural brilliance that many of the members of this nakshatra have.

Chitra is prominent in my chart and so it wasn’t surprising to me that I was immediately drawn to the idea of tiger print on my nails. Jaguar II, Victoria Monet’s second of the Jaguar albums has been in heavy rotation in my collection since “On My Mama” splashed across our screens, radio and airwaves everywhere that it inspired me to circle back to “Jaguar” her 2020 album, namely the title track.

On “Jaguar” Victoria sensually chats “Supersonic pussycat, just like a jaguar silky black” in her signature rich but airy tone. Soaring synths pull us into a disco inspired, Moog-esque heavy disco funk feel. The production on this is immaculate. Everything feels warm and spacious while still enveloping you into the smoke and sexiness of Studio 54. Audiences should have known Victoria was going to give us all of the glamour, diamonds and rich earth tones we know her for now from the title track alone.

Jaguar has been heavy in my rotation anytime I need a pick me up or to connect with my sensuality. I’d liken this song to a good amber or oud with a rich vanilla base. If you were looking to Conjure up this energy for yourself in a fragrance, I might suggest “Vanilla Era” by Boysmells, or “1996” by Byredo if you like more masculine leaning smells.

For body creams I’d pick Fenty Beauty “Butta Drop” in “Warm Cinnamon” for a sweet irresistible sultriness.

To me, this song, a lovely amber incense, and a good perfume and little else, seem like the start to a wonderful night. Victoria’s confidence and beauty as personified through her affinity for Jaguars, reminded me of my relationship to the nakshatra Chitra, and my own desire to tap in with my sensuality, intensity and passion.

Every nail set is a collaboration between myself and my nail tech. To me beauty professionals are artists and I love to let an artist do their thing. I brought my tech my tiger inspiration and she nailed it. I can’t avoid a little bling on a nail set, so I said “do you think it needs a little something?” and because she’s as psychic as me she knew that meant bling. What is of interest to me is the number of multi colored gems she placed on each nail.

@kikimancy’s ebook mentions jewels or gems in different positions on the nail as activating different chakra centers based on the length of the nails. The number of gems is significant as well. 4 is a number of stability and most nails have 4 gems. One of my index fingers (the Jupiter finger) on my left hand has 5 gems. The left side is the receptive side, and Jupiter governs our spirituality, intellect, higher education and gurus. I watched her place the gems on the nails and was amused when she added an extra gem there.

I’ve definitely been trying to find my grounding in my own spiritual practices especially my creative practices and since getting my nails done I can definitely feel more connection to my own flow and spiritual journey.

My nails have been a constant source of joy and excitement for me through this eclipse season, and in general.
